Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate buttercream frosting

Directions

  1. 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour rectangular 13 by 9 by 2 inch pan; or use two round pans, 9 by 1 1/2 inches.
  2. 2. Mix the butter and sugar in a large mixer bowl until aerated and fluffy, about three minutes.
  3. 3. Add the eggs and vanilla, beat on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally, for about five minutes.
  4. 4. Beat in the flour, baking powder and salt alternately with milk on low speed. Pour into pan(s).
  5. 5. Bake until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, (rectangular pan = 45 to 50 minutes; layers = 30 to 35 minutes).
  6. 6. Let the cake cool in the pan(s) for about 10 minutes. Remove from pan and let cool completely on a wire rack.
  7. 7. Frost the rectangular cake; or fill and frost the layers with chocolate buttercream frosting (be sure to look up our recipe for it).
