A round cookies made of brown sugar and hazelnuts.
 

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 1/4 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup ground toasted hazelnuts or pecans
  • 1 recipe maple-orange icing (optional)

Directions

  1. 1. In a mixing bowl beat shortening and butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed 30 seconds.
  2. 2. Add brown sugar, baking soda, and 'A teaspoon salt. Beat till combined, scraping bowl.
  3. 3. Beat in egg and vanilla till combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in remaining flour and nuts.
  4. 4. Shape dough into two 10-inch-long rolls. Wrap in plastic wrap or waxed paper; chill 4 to 48 hours or till firm enough to slice.
  5. 5. Cut dough into Winch-thick slices. Place slices 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  6. 6. Bake in a 375° oven about 10 minutes or till edges are firm. Transfer cookies to a wire rack and let cool, If desired, pipe a design atop each using Maple-Orange Icing.
  7. 7. Makes about 60 cookies.
  8. 8. Maple-Orange Icing: Combine 1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar, 1/8 teaspoon maple flavoring, and 1 1/2 teaspoons orange juice. Add orange juice, a few drops at a time, to reach desired consistency.
