The perfect base for a homemade pie is a homemade pie crust. Having this combined butter shortening pie crust in your recipe book makes you ready for any pie recipe that catches your fancy.
 

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces (1/4 cup) shortening
  • 2 ounces (1/4 cup) butter
  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons ice water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vinegar

Directions

  1. 1. Soften and then mix the shortening and butter together thoroughly. Place in the refrigerator and let the mix cool until it is firm.
  2. 2. Combine the flour, sugar and salt in large mixing bowl. Using a cut in tool or a fork, mash (cut in) the shortening/butter into the dry ingredients until it reaches a consistent texture.
  3. 3. Mix egg yolk, ice water and vinegar together then add them to the dough. Form dough into ball and refrigerate for about an hour.
  4. 4. When dough has chilled, roll it out on a floured surface and press into pie plate.
  5. 5. Note: If you need the crust to be prebaked follow this easy procedure called blind baking.
  6. 6. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Press parchment paper or aluminum foil into crust and place another pie plate over that. Weight the stack down with dried beans.
  7. 7. Bake for 15 minutes then remove weight and parchment. Prick crust with a fork to allow steam to escape.
  8. 8. Bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Let the crust cool on a wire rack.
