1. 1. Note: When selecting the oranges you will use, try to select ones that are firm and heavy, that indicates they hold lots of juice. They should have smooth skins without any soft spots or mold.
2. 2. Wash and peel the oranges, make sure you remove all of the white pith from the fruit or it will have a bitter taste. Slice the oranges into strips.
3. 3. Combine the sliced oranges, vodka and brandy into a glass container that has a lid.
4. 4. Cut the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and scrape out the soft inner part with the blade of a knife. Add the inner part of the bean, and the pod halves as well, to the orange mixture.
5. 5. Cover and place the container in the back of a cabinet for three weeks so the flavors will steep together.
6. 6. After the time has passed, strain and filter the mixture eliminating any pieces so that you retain only the liquid.
7. 7. Make a concentrated simple syrup by boiling the sugar and water for 5 minutes, making sure the sugar has completely dissolved. Let the simple syrup cool to room temperature.
8. 8. Combine the strained orange liquor with the syrup and transfer to a clean glass container.
9. 9. Cover the container and place it in the back of the refrigerator. Let it age for four weeks.
