These licorice flavor drops are easy to make and always a kid favorite. For holloween you could make them up in black and orange; or have red licorice drops all year around.
 

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 tablespoon black (or red) food coloring
  • 1/4 teaspoon anise extract or pulverized anise seeds

Directions

  1. 1. Combine both sugars with the water and corn syrup in a pot over medium heat and stir to dissolve the sugar into the liquid.
  2. 2. When the mixture has boiled for the first time wash the sugar crystals down from the sides of the pot. Put a candy thermometer in the pot and cook without stirring to 290 degrees F (the soft crack stage).
  3. 3. Remove the pot from the heat and add food coloring and anise flavoring; stir them in gently.
  4. 4. With a teaspoon drop round patties about the size of quarters onto a greased baking sheet. If the candy in the pot gets too firm for spooning reheat it gently until it softens.
  5. 5. Cool the drops completely but not in the refrigerator or the pieces will stick.
  6. 6. Wrap the drops individually in wax paper.
