Sweet Rolls Recipe - Traditional Yeast Dough

The dough from this traditional sweet rolls recipe can be used for cinnamon rolls recipes, pumpkin rolls recipes, dinner roll recipes and any other roll recipe that you might invent.
 

Ingredients

  • 2 packets active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees f)
  • 1/2 cup sugar plus 1 teaspoon in all
  • 1/2 cup scalded milk, cooled to lukewarm
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 5 cups flour

Directions

  1. 1. Dissolve yeast in warm water and one teaspoon of sugar. Cover and let sit for 10 minutes.
  2. 2. Stir in the rest of the sugar, milk, salt, eggs, butter and 2 1/2 cups flour; beat until smooth. Mix in enough additional flour to make dough easy to handle. Knead for five minutes.
  3. 3. Put the dough in greased bowl, turn the greased side up. Cover, place in a warm draft free area and let rise until doubled in bulk, about one hour.
  4. 4. Punch the dough down and shape.
  5. 5. For dinner rolls, pinch off rounds and place them on a greased sheet pan. For cinnamon rolls, jelly rolls or pumpking rolls; roll the dough into a rectangle, spread your desired filling and then roll the dough up and place it on a greased sheet pan.
  6. 6. Cover and let sit in a warm draft free place and rise again until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes.
  7. 7. Bake at 375 degrees F for 30 to 40 minutes (some ovens vary).
  8. 8. Remove from heat and let cool on wire rack.
